When a propeller vibrates in a fluid, it appears that the moment of inertia of the propeller increases by the effect of the fluid induced. Here, experiments are carried out to examine the effects of arrangements and shapes of the impeller on the induced moment of inertia ΔI. When the aspect ratio of the rectangular blade is larger than 3, ΔI can be calculated on the basis of two-dimentional potential theory, disregarding the circulation by Joukowsky hypothesis. When the space-chord ratio of the blade is larger than 1, ΔI is in direct propotion to sin2 β, where β is the attack angle. As the flow passing over the tip of the blade results in decreasing of the value of ΔI, the plane flgure of the blade tip has important effects on ΔI. From these results of experiments, the writers propose a rational method for estimating ΔI of the propeller having plane blade.
