On the electric railcars whose motors are nose-suspended, the gears frequently failed on account of the end tooth bearing, and as one of the counter-measures against teeth failures the pinions which are used on the electric railcars of J.N.R. are crowned. As the amount of the crowning of these pinions is very large, causing partial tooth bearing in consequence, the method of calculating the stress of gear having even tooth bearing cannot be applied to the crowned gear, but no calculation method adapted for the latter has been established. In order to obtain the stress and stress distribution in the crowned gear, the author derived a calculation method, using the theory about two elastic bodies in contact with each other and the theory of a very long cantilever plate under a load of transverse concentrated force. For the theory of a very long cantilever plate, the author showed that the theory agreed with the experiment, and further introduced an example of stress calculation for the crowned gear.
