Abstract
Effect of surface roughness on the boundary friction is studied under various conditions of loads, speeds and lubricants. As the result of experiment it has been found that not only the height of roughness but also its direction of polishing to the direction of sliding affects so much on the boundary friction. Although friction where a soft materials is cut by the roughness of a hard surface is increased with the increase of roughness, in many cases friction is increased with the decrease of roughness and friction sliding parallel to the direction of polishing is larger than that in the perpendicular direction. It is found, therefore, that the effects due to cutting of one surface by the other could not be in greater proportion of boundary friction.
