In this paper we describe experimental studies on the piston cooling of a diesel engine by changing the piston ring and the piston clearance. Seven types of ring were used in the first ring groove, and the piston clearance was increased step by step. From the measurements of the piston temperature and the calculation of the oil film thickness, the following facts were demonstrated. 1) So long as the operation of the piston ring is normal, the range of piston temperature influenced by the shape or the size of the piston ring is very small. 2) In a square faced ring, the increase in the axial width hardly affects the piston temperature, because the oil film on its surface becomes thick. While, the increase in the radial thickness of the ring is very effective on the piston cooling. 3) In case of the same width and thickness of the ring, the bevelled ring or the chrome plated ring reduces the piston temperature because of their thin oil film. 4) The top land clearance of the piston has remarkable influence on the piston temperature. especially when the clearance is limited as small as possible the piston temperature is very low.
