Abstract

The status of religion in Japan is far lower than in most countries, including Western societies. The majority of Japanese people regard themselves as having no paticular religious belief, and try to keep a distance from religious enthusiasm, while only a small number of people are activists. However, in reality, Japanese society is based on a unique religious tradition with rich and colorful religious experiences. Therefore, studies of religion in Japan should focus on such religious experiences as a whole, instead of each minor religion of little importance. It is of great importance that a hybridization of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Japanese studies took place in the premodern period, under the government of the warrior class, which facilitated the building of the Japanese people as a nation. It is highly incumbent on studies of religion in Japan to give a full and universal explanation of such particular religious characteristics of Japanese society in the global context.
