Description
We can find a clue to understand Korean society in the process of social change in the Korean "traditional" culture and society in which people widely approve charismatic power. There emerged after the 19th century quite a number of idealogues who were characteristic in their apocalyptical thoughts based on the Chonggamnok, a book of prophecy written in the 14th century at the beginning of the Lee dynasty, which spread among people. It is a quite interesting fact that this apocalyptic discourse does not have its origin in the Jewish-Christian tradition. The motif "apocalyptical thought and messianic idea" has appeared repeatedly as far back as the Three Kingdoms period-together with Maitreya worship in Buddhism. It seems that the "nationalism" which emerged from the conflict between Sino-centrism and the impact of the West in Korea can be grasped to some extent relating to this apocalyptic popular thought. This social condition facilitated the growth of Christianity. This way of giving meaning to the passage of time has been common to both the phenomena. These are closely interrelated, together with the condition of "anomie" that can be seen in the phase of social change.
