With the recent progress in the ore-dressing techniques, grade of copper in concentrates has been remarkably improved.
As a device to operate blast-furnace for treatment of such high grade copper concentrates, Shisakajima Smelter of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. adopted a newly-developed smelting process in Dec. 1954, what we call “Direct Smelting” using “Sideflue” type blast furnace equipped with a specially designed feeding hopper.
In this process, concentrates, after blended to a uniform viscosity, is charged directly into blast furnace to make effective use of combustion heat of sulphur and iron contained in concentrates and at the same time all of the Cu-smelting exhaust gas is led directly to sulphuric acid plant for H2SO4 production.
The major technical and economical merits of this smelting process are summarized as follows:
(1) Fine concentrates can be directly treated without going through complicated preparatory treatments.
(2) Copper can be extracted more economically.
(3) Sulphur contained in concentrates can not only be efficiently utilized but be recovered in the form of H2SO4 at a high yield.
(4) Fuel consumption can be cut down by means of pyritic smelting of concentrates.
(5) Operation process can be simplified so that the amount of labor and power be saved.
(6) SO2 can be recovered from Cu-Smelting exhaust gas economically and with out any waste.
