The settling characteristics of suspensions of clay inerals were investigated adopting the mess-cylinder methcd. It was observed that the settling characteristics of suspension of kaolin or sericite were similar to that of finely ground quartz, while these of suspension of montmorillonite were extremely inferior to the above and the flocculation phenomena at low pH were like that of metallic hydroxide.<BR>In the case of the suspension of the mixture of clay minerals, the settling characteristics were governed by the content of montmorillonite. When the content of montmorillonite was very small, the settling rates were conversely more rapid than in its absence. This rapid settling could be explained by reasons that montmorillonite particles form “gelatiniform structure” in water because of the swelling, and they made other clay mineral particles flocculate by bridging action, such as that of high molecular flocculator.<BR>Then clay minerals in the waste water from several mines were identified by x-raydiffraction and differentid thermo-analysls. Consequently, thesettling characteristics of the suspensions werest, rongly influenced by the content of montmorillonite in them.
