Becasue of the uranium demand for military use being curtailed, the world production of, uranium has been decreased in the past a few years. This paper discusses the present situation in such countries as Canada, U.S.A., South Africa, Australia and Japan in reference to uranium resources of those nations.
In the United States of America, the prospecting of vein type deposit formed in the Pre-Cambrian was not succeeded in her early days of uranium hunt. However, since 1958, a number of sedimentary type uranium deposits were discovered as a result of placing emphasis of search on this type of depsoits.
In Japan, the prospecting. was first concentrated on the vein type depsoits around Okayama and Tottori prefectures and then on the sedimentary type. Ningyo-toge and Togo depsoits were discovered and the total ore reserves of the country is now estimated at 2, 871, 000 tons. Though the term “slow-down” was once used for nuclear power generation, the rapid promotion is required in this field. In order to meet the sharp increase of energy demand, a considerable amount of uranium is needed. Natural uranium produces plutonium, a new fuel. All in all, prospecting of uranium is to be continued vigorously.
