Since 1956 Atomic. Fuel Corporation has been prospecting uranium deposits by way of developing galleries at Ningyô-tôge and TôgôMines, the two representative uranium mines in Japan.
As regards to the radiological protection of miners, two types of radiation (external and internal) are measured. The radon gas and its daughters have a potential of causing the serious radiation hazards in mines. We are, therefore, making utomost effort to reduce the concentrations of radon and its daughters by mechanical ventilation systems.
Since 1959 we have been surveying the influence to the surrounding area by solid and liquid wastes containing radioactive substances from the mine but there is no trouble as regards to the radiological health and safety.
A summarization is made here on the experiences gained in such fields as the regular measurementsof external exposure dose, radon gas and radioactive dusts and also on the investigation of their contorl in these two mines.
