Abstract
In the first place, for the purpose of investigating the form of jet produced in water vessels, various experiments were made. Next, the form of a jet in a jet pump and the relation between its form and the quantity of water and coal particles pumped up by the jet were investigated by using a small jet pump of glass. Results obtained are as follows:-1. A jet produced in a water vessel spreads like an unfolded fan.
2. A jet spouted from the nozzle of the jet pump spreads like an unfolded fan. But, when it advances in the suction chamber, its form varies with the distance between the exit of the nozzle and the entrance of the throat of the pump.
3. We suspect that the quantity of water pumped up by the jet was decided by the form of the jet.
4. We can consider that the quantity of the mixture of water and coal particles sucked up by the jet, Qtand tha quantity of coal particles contained in this mixture, Qp were governed by the form of the let.
5. There exists an optimum value in the distance between the exit of the nozzle and the entrance of the throat to make Qt and Qp the maximum. This optimum distance depended on the form of the jet.
