In the present study, we compared a reaction site induced by ultrasound with plasma in an aqueous solution. These reaction sites have common features that they are heterogeneous and local high-energy site formed in aqueous solution and that they are surrounded by interface between gas and liquid. Some researchers point out that plasma is formed in the sonochemical cavitation bubble. However, there is no report on the comparison between sonochemical and plasma reaction sites so far. In the plasma system, large amount of hydrogen gas evolved but oxygen gas evolution was not observed. Further, the effect of the atmosphere (air or Ar) on the hydrogen gas evolution was not outstanding, which is different from sonochemical reaction. Reduction of Au(III) ion was accelerated by the addition of anionic surfactant SDS in the both reaction sites, indicating that SDS is a precursor of reducing agent. However, when non-ionic PEG-MS was added, Au reduction in the plasma system did not proceed. This result suggests that not only surface active property but also electrostatic interaction is needed for molecules' approach to the vicinity of plasma interface.
