Description
This paper is a product of a series of field research and participant observation of the work of "Jehovah's Witnesses" missionaries from 1992 to 1998. The researcher was interested in the conviction process; the setting, the way of presentation and the argument. By employing the ethnomethodological analysis, the researcher tries to understand "faith" as an interaction while illustrating the reflexive process of "propagation and reception". Of the two major analytical methods of ethnomethodology, "conversation analysis" and "studies in work", the researcher employed the latter. The focus is 1) how the missionaries used categories when they talked people over to their point of view, and 2) how their activities with their pragmatism worked effectively when "the researcher" as a participant observer accepted their conviction in the interactive process of the propagation and reception settings. Conversation analysis, which was not included here, will be presented by the same author in a following paper.
