The Koudoh-Ohmoto and Hitonomichi cases are well known for typifying lese majesty cases in 1930's Japan. This is because previous studies concerning the oppression of religious sects by the Tokubetsu-koutou Police have focused on the various sectarian doctrines and rivalry between State and sects. However the Tokubetsu-koutou Police section actually approached these two cases from different angles. In the Koudou-Ohmoto case of 1935, the Tokubetsu-koutou Police censured the sect for becoming a progressive political movement. On the other hand, in the Hitonomiti case of 1936, the police section censured the sect for propagating unscientific superstitions. In this article we attempt to show the multiplicity of causal reasons behind the oppression of religious sects by the Tokubetsu-koutou Police, through analysis of the monthly reports of the Tokubetsu-koutou Police section.
