It is difficult to treat directly the air-liquid-solid three-phase flow in an air-lift pump to lift solid materials such as manganese nodules etc. from deep sea-beds, because air-bubbles and solid materials move unsteadily with defomations of air-bubbles. In this paper the hydrodynamic interaction between rising air-bubbles and a solid sphere fixed in a quiescent glycerol within a circular vessel with a deep depth is discussed experimentally using high-speed video-cameras and a load cell to measure the hydrodynamic force of the fixed solid sphere.
