Abstract

Generally we cannot avoid a slight inclination of the sextant from the vertical plane, in observing the altitude of a celestial body on the ship. In order to investigate the inclination regarding its property and quantity, I carried out lots of experiments by photograph measurement, using a special equipment of my making. (Refer to Fig.1, Fig.2 and Fig.3) From the results of the experiments, the following points have been clarified. (i) The plane of the sextant usually has a tendency to incline clockwise against the celestial body. (ii) The quantity of the inclination is generally small, that is, about 1 degree. (iii) The property of the inclination rather resembles that of the personal error.
