Description

An ovigerous female of Pinnotheres pholadis de HAAN was obtained from the mantle cavity of a common mussel, Mytilus edulis Linnaeus at Nojima coast, south-western part of Tokyo Bay, in September, 1977. The female pea-crab was kept in a glass rearing vessel filled fresh sea water, until the larvae were hatched. The first zoeae were kept in a small glass vessel. They were fed on freshly hatched Artemia nauplii. Unfortunately, the larvae did not moult into more advanced stages. The first zoea of this species is unique in having rostral and lateral spines as compared with that of four Japanese species, P. sp., P. latissimus, P. sinensis and P. boninensis.
