This study examines the effects of the victim's self-esteem (i.e., self-competence and self-liking) and sense of entitlement on account-accepting tactics. The effects of accounting tactics (i.e., apologies, excuses, and justifications) on the preferences for account-accepting tactics are also examined. It was hypothesized that the victim's self-competence would predict his/her own rating of entitlement, which would in turn predict the victim's preferences for account-accepting tactics (i.e., nonverbal display, conditional acceptance, minimizing, and discussion). Scenarios of account-requiring situations varied by offense severity were used as stimuli, and the participants played the victim's role. Questionnaires were administered to 102 students and 115 non-student participants. The results of the covariance structural analysis supported the predicted relationships. That is, a significant path was found from self-competence (but not from self-liking) to entitlement. All paths from entitlement to account-accepting tactics were significant and in the predicted directions. Regarding the effects of accounting tactics, justifications were likely to induce the victim to use conditional acceptance. It was also found that the victim's preferences for account-accepting tactics were greatly influenced by account-requiring situations. The implications of the findings are discussed and future directions are suggested.
