説明

Most of the medical waste generated as a result of activities in medical institutions is packed and sealed tightly in containers and treated by incineration process for the purpose of sterilization and volume reduction. Medical waste, however, widely varies in shape and characteristics, and it is said to be difficult to incinerate medical waste stably and perfectly without using auxiliary fuel as it is required the sealed waste containers to be directly fed into incinerators for treatment. The Vertical Combustor was developed to incinerate a wide variety of waste including medical waste in a single furnace. The Vertical Combustor partially incinerates the waste by primary combustion air supplied from the bottom of the primary combustion chamber, and through the combustion process, waste is heated up to approximately 900 °C to be pyrolized. Then, secondary combustion air is blown into the secondary combustion chamber to completely burn the gas generated by the pyrolysis process. The gas in the furnace of the Vertical Combustor in operation was sampled out and analyzed, and it was confirmed that the gasification combustion accompanied by the pyrolysis is the key process of this furnace and that the Vertical Combustor is capable of incinerating low-calorific waste stably without any support of auxiliary fuel. The Vertical Combustor dedicated to incineration of medical waste was delivered to Tokyo Waterfront Recycle Power in 2007. This plant incorporated with a waste heat boiler is generating power for the grid and utilizing the same for plant internal use through recovering heat from the steam generated by the plant itself and the adjacent another incinerator for industrial waste. The plant has been incinerating medical waste steadily and performing energy recovery continuously since it came into operation.
