(1) 3-Phenylazo-4-aminonaphthalene sulfonamide and its derivatives were synthesized by diazotizing aniline and its ring-substitutes and coupling the resulting diazonium compounds with 4-aminonaphthalene sulfonamide-(1) and its N1-substitutes.<br>(2) These compounds were tested as to their activities in vitro against Encephalitis japonica.<br>(3) Among the series of 3-phenylazo-4-aminonaphthalene sulfonamides, p-(3-phenylazo-4-aminonaphthalenesulfonamido)-benzoic acid showed the most marked activity against the virus, approximately 15 times that of sodium 3-phenylazo-4-aminonaphthalene sulfonate, and the relatively low toxicity. This drug is of promise for the in vivo test.
