Abstract

An experimental study was made of the relation between the noise generated by a nozzle and the air-jet force. The noise reduction may be achieved by reduction of the air-jet velocity according to M. J. Lighthill's acoustic analogy. And the reduction of noise is inevitably accompanied by the decrease of air-jet force. The purpose of the study is to develop a low-noise nozzle with minimum reduction of the air-jet force. Seven kinds of nozzles were tested. It was found that the purpose was achieved by suitable use of the noise characteristics of nozzle, and even the reduction of air-jet force leads to the increase of noise in the case of the diffuser nozzle.
