In this paper, the behavior of vanes is experimentally studied with respect to a variable displacement vane pump. Three kinds of experimental methods are employed: directly observing the movement of vanes through an acrylic window of a pump cover, "painting" blue lacquer paint on the inner surface of a cam ring, and measuring the electrical resistance between the vane and the camring. The results of this experiment indicate that the vanes are detected to be detached from the camring at four different positions of the rotor, and to move complicatedly in the vane slots. The characteristics of the detachment of vanes are approximately estimated by a simple theory.
