Description

Nitration of 1-acetyltryptophan (2) and N-phthaloyl-1-acetyltryptophan (3) with concentrated sulfuric acid and sodium nitrate afforded 1-acetyl-6-nitrotryptophan (5) and N-phthaloyl-1-acetyl-6-nitrotryptophan (6), respectively. When more than one equivalent mole of sodium nitrate was used in the nitration of 3, the neutral product was obtained in a good yield and its structure is discussed.
