This paper will examine the narrative reconstruction of The Tale of Genji in the adapted Noh Play "Yugao," and discuss its implication on the interpretive discourse of The Tale of Genji. By doing so, the paper seeks to define the performative aspect of narrative language which shapes the original text of The Tale of Genji. The Noh piece reveals the significant extent to which an identification with Genji is central to the understanding of The Tale of Genji, for instance, as the play overwhelmingly adheres to verses which are mostly expressive of Genji's own aural sense and affect. Rarely do the verses articulate the feelings of the shite (protagonist) character Yugao, or give cues to imagine what her demeanor might be like. In The Tale of Genji, Yugao is a narrative void represented by her very absence, a fact which is emphasized by the embodied form she takes on as the supernatural shite in dream-noh in two parts. Similarly, the Noh piece reveals that the narrative structure of The Tale of Genji fuses Yugao and the evil spirit of Rokujo together into one entity, which is striking since the double-layered structure of dream-noh establishes these characters as two separate beings existing on different temporal axes of one's own, as "an embodiment of the past" and "the experience of the past in the present."
