Description

The objective of this paper is to consider man, environment, and the relationship between them by examining the definition of "environment".Firstly, I find five general concepts which seem to constitute the definition of "environment" in basic dictionaries and encyclopedias: [1]environment and the living matter or man, who is in it, as placed in a binary relation, [2]environment as a spatial concept, [3]environment and living matter asrelated interactively, [4]environment as divided into natural and social environment, and [5]environment as composed of multiple factors which influence living matter as a whole.Secondly, I examine "Declaration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment"and theories of environmental psychology(particularly interactional world views and transactional world views)to see if they have the five concepts mentioned above and have other views about the concept of environment. Finally, I show some ideas that man and his environment are not placed in a binary relation.
