A new type of acoustooptic (AO) modulator with two interdigital transducers (IDTs) on a piezoelectric substrate and with an AO medium in contact with the substrate is fabricated and investigated. One of the IDTs is used for driving an acoustic wave in the substrate. This wave is radiated into the AO medium. The other IDT controls the reflection of the acoustic wave propagating in the substrate. The reflected wave is radiated into the AO medium, and it operates as the second wave. By changing the electrical terminal condition at the second IDT as short- or open-circuited, the diffraction pattern of the optical wave crossing the interaction region of the two radiated acoustic waves is changed to be in either `on' or `off' mode. By applying an electrical digital phase-modulated signal to the second IDT, a similar modulation of light can be achieved.
