Abstract
The pitting corrosion and hydrogen absorption embrittlement of Zr in fractionating tower handling HCl solution were discussed. The corrosion rate of Zr in the 20% boiling HCl tended to be increased by the addition of a trace of HF (1ppm). Then, it became clear by the analysis of operating solution that the corrosion of tower was attributable to the presence of F in this solution. The carbon was also used in this plants for heat exchanger tube, then local corrosion of Zr was accelerated by the galvanic action when it was in contact with the carbon chips. The thermally oxidized film of Zr acted as protective for corrosion, but when its film was locally broken, the corrosion rate of breaked areas were accelerated in the presence of HF.
