The effects of organic inhibitors on pitting corrosion of aluminum and its alloys were studied in NaCl solutions with and without ethylene glycol and a trace of cupric ions. The addition of ethylene glycol resulted in the increase in pit depth to some extent, while had virtually no effect on the performance of these corrosion inhibitors. The addition of benzotriazole, sodium 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and oxine was effective for preventing corrosion. These inhibitors decreased the Cu2+ concentration in the corrosive solutions to form the precipitations. The metal surface, even on the intermetallic compounds, was entirely covered with the film, and hence the pitting potential moved to the positive direction. Also, diffusion of dissolved oxygen from the bulk of solution to the metal surface was limited by the surface film. These factors improved the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys to pitting.
