Pb-Ag junction electrodes are expected to work in similar manner as Pb-Ag alloys which are widely used as anodes for the cathodic protection of metals in sea-water. Corrosion resistance of laboratory melted junction electrodes which contains various concentration ratio of Ag was evaluated by means of electrochemical measurements such as potentiostatic and galvanostatic anodic-polarization in artificial sea-water. Regardless of the ratio of Ag of the junction electrodes, the anodic polarization curves ranged from corrosion potential to -0.45V (vs. SCE) showed similar pattern with that of Pb-Ag alloy electrode. The curves showed that oxidation of Pb was predominant in the region to less than +30mV but the electrode reaction on Ag occurred in preference to that on Pb from +30mV to 2.00V. The potentiostatic polarization curves of the junction electrodes at 2.00V were also similar to that of the alloy and their current densities increased with the lapse of time. In the corrosion resistance test, the junction electrodes and the alloy kept a same constant potential and these electrodes gained weight. In addition, the corrosion products on the junction electrodes were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscope. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis, existence of Ag in the junction electrode accelerated the phase change of PbSO4 to β-PbO2. These results suggest that Pb-Ag junction electrode can be adopted as a remarkably stable electrode in sea-water as Pb-Ag alloy.
