Abstract
Corrosion resistance for various kinds of materials was investigated under molten carbonate fuel cell environment at 650°C. In addition, anodic polarization measurements and free corrosion potential measurements for several pure metals and stainless steels were carried out in molten carbonate. Ni and aluminized stainless steels showed good corrosion resistance to molten carbonate under fuel gas environment, and Cr was also an effective element to improve the corrosion resistance in this environment. On the other hand austenitic stainless steels such as SUS 316 L and SUS 310 showed fairly good corrosion resistance to molten carbonate under oxidant gas environment because protective oxide films were formed on the surfaces. The results obtained from electrochemical measurements were well consistent with those of conventional weight loss measurements. Therefore, electrochemical measurements are considered to be an effective method to evaluate the corrosion resistance of metals in molten carbonate.
