The grey cast iron (FC 20) was oxidized in air at the temperature range from 973 to 1123K under the cyclic heating conditions and the weight increase was measured. The results were compared with those in the continuous heating condition. The weight increase in the cyclic oxidation was smaller than that in the isothermal oxidation mainly at the temperatures higher than 1023K. At 973K the decrease of the oxidation rate in the cyclic oxidation was not so large. The phase transformation temperature of the cast iron (α→γ) is around 1000K. The oxidation rate might be affected by such a transformation in the metal during the cyclic oxidation. The SEM and EPMA observations showed that the island-like oxide layers were not observed in the metal phase after a cyclic oxidation though they were formed in the metal phase after the isothermal oxidation. Such a difference in the morphology of the oxide layer might be caused by the phase transformation of the cast iron. The oxide scale was consisted of duplex layers even after the cyclic oxidation. The outer layer was iron oxide and the inner layer was iron silicate. The inner layer was relatively thin for the cyclic oxidation as compared with the case of the isothermal oxidation. The selective condensation of silicone at the metal-scale interface and the improvement of the adhesion of the scale to the metal might suppress the growth of the inner layer.
