Theoretical analysis on the optimum catholic protection potential and/or current, proposed previously, was extended to steel structures buried in soil. As derived from the theory, the optimum current determined at which the faradaic impedance showed a maximum corresponded very well with the limiting current of oxygen diffusion. For practical application of this to large scale steel structures, a set of probes and its polarization procedures were examined and discussed. The laboratory scale test results obtained with these probes agreed well with that obtained with an usual three electrodes polarization system. The theory and procedure was successfully applied to determine the optimum protection current of a model tank of 2m in diameter.
