When the localized corrosion behavior is studied by the scanning micro-electrode method, it is necessary to sample many data in a short time. In order to satisfy this requirement, a high speed and high precision scanning micro-electrode system has been developed. In this system, data can be sampled every 40μs and 3, 000, 000 data can be sampled and graphically analyzed in ten minutes. The effect of the probe-specimen surface distance on the potential distribution was first studied. The results showed that the potential distribution is affected by the probe-specimen surface distance, that is, when the distance is large, the potential distiribution is averaged and no localized potential distribution can be observed, while it is small, the local potential distribution is very clear. This indicates that it is difficult to estimate the real current density. The potential distribution well coincides with the shape of the corrosion site, and a fine defect at coated materials can be detected by using a potentiostat.
