The change in electrical conductivity of FeOOH-Fe3O4 aggregates with addition of amorphous iron oxyhydroxides (a-oxide) were measured at room temperature and 1kHz to understand the role of a-iron oxides in the high-order structure of the aggregates. The addition of dry a-iron oxides to α-FeOOH-Fe3O4 system increases the conductivity in the α-FeOOH-predominant region and decreases it in the Fe3O4-predominant region. This result suggests that the dry a-iron oxides orientate α-FeOOH crystals in the aggregate and break a chain structure of Fe3O4 crystals; the alternately arrayed structure of α-FeOOH aggregates and Fe3O4 crystalt is kept unchanged not-withstanding the presence of the dry a-iron oxides. On the other hand. the addition of wet a-iron oxides to the α-FeOOH-Fe3O4 binary system transforms the series-type structure into a paralleltype formed by linkage of each constituent, FeOOH or Fe3O4. The role of both the dry and wet a-iron oxides in the γ-FeOOH-Fe3O4 system is similar to that of dry a-iron oxides in the α-FeOOH-Fe3O4 system.
