Basic programs were developed in order to achieve both DC potentiostatic polarization measurement and AC impedance measurement simultaneously, together with data analysis. The automatic instrumental system was applied to investigate the synergistic inhibition mechanism of amines and potassium iodide against corrosion of 99.99% Fe in deaerated 1N-H2SO4. n-Hexylamine (MHA), di-n-hexylamine (DHA), and tri-n-hexylamine (THA) were used as the amine inhibitors. The faradaic conductance evaluated from the diameter of the inductive loop in each Nyquist diagram was consistent with the differential value of the faradaic current with the potential. The inhibition efficiencies calculated from corrosion current densities obtained by the DC polarization method agreed with those from the faradaic conductance by the AC impedance method. Adsorption behavior of the inhibitors was discussed from the dependence of current density, faradaic conductance, and double layer capacitance upon potential. Amines and iodide ion adsorbed cooperatively on the cathodically polarized electrode and competitively on the anodically polarized one, and the synergistic adsorption of THA and iodide ion onto the cathodic surface of the electrode was extensively stabilized.
