Abstract

In order to investigate the correlation between the degree of sensitization of stainless steel pipe material and its susceptibility to intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) in simulated BWR environment, the following tests were performed on furnace and weld sensitized stainless steel pipes: (1) 10% oxalic acid etch test (JIS G 0571), (2) copper sulfate-sulfuric acid test (JIS G 0575), (3) EPR test, and, (4) CBB test in high temperature pure water. The following conclusions were resulted: (1) The results of the G 0575 test or of the EPR test and the results of the CBB test were in good agreement, (2) Part of specimens that passed the G 0575 test revealed IGSCC in the CBB test, and, (3) Reduction of carbon content of the material below 0.020% immunized the weld HAZ against IGSCC in simulated BWR environment.
