In order to elucidate the high temperature oxidation behavior of binary alloys, the oxidation of Cu-Ni alloys was investigated. Alloys with eleven compositions, 0, 0.7, 1.8, 5.0, 10.3, 25.3, 40.2, 51.6, 61.4, 80.0 and 100 mole % Ni, were oxidized in air at 600-900°C and the weight increase and layer structure were examined by the gravimetric, microscopic, XMA and X-ray diffraction methods. Copper-rich alloys showed the parabolic oxidation with nearly the same rate as that of pure copper. Layer structure consisting of CuO (layer I), Cu2O (layer II), Cu2O+NiO (layer III) and Cu+NiO (layer IV, subscale) was observed and each layer was found to grow parabolically. In the middle region of alloy composition, the oxidation rate decreased with the increase in nickel content. Layer III grew parabolically after a certain induction period, and the subscale formed locally in the vicinity of oxide/alloy interface. Nickel-rich alloys exhibited nearly the same oxidation rate as pure nickel. The compact and adherent NiO film was found on the alloy surface without subscale. On the basis of these observed results, the oxidation behavior of Cu-Ni alloys was discussed.
