Description

A microcomputer system based on Moire methods to measure corrosion patterns was developed. Combination of illumination light with a shadowing grid presented to TV camera Moire fringes, which consisted of bright and dark ones appearing one after another. When a specimen was moved upward to the grid in steps of 50μm variations of brightness were observed for 256×256 position elements on the specimen. Depth index for each element was given in terms of the number of steps required to reach the center of the first bright fringe. The system was calibrated with standard specimens and applied to low alloyed steel coupon which had been exposed in flowing seawater. The system was useful to analyze two dimensional distribution of penetration depths on unevenly corroded specimens.
