Abstract

Ticarcillin (TIPC) is a newly synthesized broad-spectrum antibiotic similar in antibacterial activity to carbenicillin (CBPC) and sulbenicillin (SBPC), and it is more active in vitro against Pseudomonas spp. than CBPC and SBPC.
The antibacterial activity of TIPC was stronger by far than that of ampicillin (ABPC) against indole-positive and indole-negative Proteus spp. TIPC was inactive against highly ABPC-resistant strains of Escherichia coli, but it was slightly more active against ABPC-susceptible strains than CBPC and SBPC.
The therapeutic effect of TIPC on systemic and urinary tract infections experimentally induced by Ps. aeruginosa in mice and rats respectively was superior to that of CBPC and SBPC. The phagocytic and killing activities of rabbit polymorphonuclear leukocytes against Ps. aeruginosa and other organisms were enhanced in vitro by TIPC.
