Abstract

To improve the tenacity of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), isoprene was grafted onto polyhydroxybutyrate by direct radiation. The optimal conditions were determined, at which the grafting process occurred and suitable grafting degree was obtained. The effect of different solvents, monomer concentration and radiation dose on the grafting degree was studied. Some investigations and characterization on the prepared copolymer were made and the possible graft reaction process was explored. Tensile test of the graft polymer was carried out. The results showed that superior tenacity was achieved. The toughening mechanisms of isoprene graft modifying PHB were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
