Abstract
Some polyesters with moderate viscosity were synthesized by reactions of dicarboxylic acids with alkyl dihalides using 1,8-diazabicyclo-[5.4.0]-7-undecene (DBU) in aprotic polar solvents such as dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) under relatively mild conditions. The viscosity and yield of the resulting polymer increased with increasing monomer concentration. Although polymers with relatively high viscosity were obtained when the reaction with p-xylylene dichloride was carried out at 70°C in DMSO, the viscosity of the resulting polymers decreased with increasing reaction temperature when the reaction with m-xylylene dibromide was carried out in DMSO.
