Description

Air is accelerated from the state of rest in a circular pipe at a constant-acceleration until it reaches a predetermined cross-sectional mean velocity. Then the history of the cross-sectional mean velocity is changed. Three types of histories are chosen: (1) the flow is accelerated at a different constant-acceleration, (2) the cross-sectional mean velocity is kept constant, and (3) the flow is decelerated at a constant-deceleration. The effects of the history of pipe flow thus generated on the transition to turbulence and the axial propagation velocity of turbulence are investigated. An analytical solution is derived for the axial velocity component of the transient laminar flow and compared with the measured values.
