The vapor phase synthesis of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) by intermolecular dehydration of methanol and tert-butyl alcohol was investigated with various solid acid catalysts using a fixed bed flow reactor under atmospheric pressure. Heteropolytungstates such as 12-tungstophosphoric acid and 12-tungstosilicic acid showed high activity (Table 1) for production of MTBE. In the case of mixed tungsto-molybdophosphoric acid catalysts, deactivation took place with increase in the molybdenum content (Fig. 1). Among the metal salts used, Na, K, and Mg salts were more active than Zn and Cu salts, but none of them was more active than 12-tungstophosphoric acid (Table 2). The optimum reaction conditions were examined using the 12-tungstophosphoric acid catalyst, and the maximum yield of MTBE was obtained under the following conditions: temperature, 90°C; contact time, W/F=5.9g-cat. hr mol-1 (Figs. 2, 3).
