Abstract

Heat treated QIless (Quinoline Insolubles free) pitch is produced from crude coal tar through a continuous heat treatment process, the Cherry Process, developed by Osaka Gas. It embodies mechanical separation of 3 to 30 micron carbonaceous mesophase, which is used for a binderless high density carbon material called Meso-Carbon Microbeads. This QIless pitch is also prepared as spinnable pitch for carbon fiber by two procedures as outlined below.<br>One method yields isotropic pitch, with good spinnability, a high softening point of 280°C and high infusibility. Less expensive carbon fiber (GPCF) of 80 to 120kg/mm2 strength and 4t/mm2 modulus for general industrial use, because of its excellent plastic impregnation ability, thermal insulation ability at high temperature and fine wear-resistance, is produced from the isotropic spinnable pitch by a procedure consisting of RGJ (Rotary Gas Jet) spinning, infusibilization, and carbonization. Fibrous activated carbon of 2, 500m2/g specific surface area, used for various absorbing/desorbing materials and as a dehumidifier, is produced from same isotropic pitch by the procedure consisting of spinning, infusibilization, and activation.<br>The other method yields anisotropic pitch with high spinnability, which is prepared by solvent-extraction, hydrogenation and polymerization, based on the Kyukoshi Process. We have successfully put graphitized fiber of 380kg/mm2 strength and 70t/mm2 modules to practical use, which is produced by applying the molecular orientation technique.
