Essential oil content in florets of lavandin (Lavandula × intermedia Emeric ex Loisel.) increased during development of inflorescence, and reached maximum just before anthesis. The relative ratio (%) of individual essential oils changed before and after anthesis. Linalool continued to increase to more than 40% of the total essential oil. In plantlets regenerated from leaf-callus, the composition of essential oil varied. Among them, significant negative correlations were observed between the ratio of linalyl cation-derived compounds (linalool, linalyl acetate, lavandulol and lavandulyl acetate) and that of a -terpinyl cation-derived compounds (α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene and 1, 8-cineole), and between the ratio of ionized GPP-derived compounds (linalyl cation- and α-terpinyl cation-derived compounds) and that of bicyclated GPP-derived compounds (camphor and borneol). The data suggest that it is possible to select lavandin plants with high linalool and lavandulol contents low camphor and borneol levels. In addition, variants with different composition of essential oils could be very useful for tracing the biosynthetic pathways of essential oils in lavender.
