Description
The mortality of inpatients at the Department of Psychiatry, the Konodai National Hospital in Ichikawa, was studied for the years of 1966-1985. The total number of deaths was 99. The crude death rate was 16.6. The number of death cases and the crude death rate gradually increased from the period of 1966-1970 to the period of 1976-1980. The number of death cases and the death rate in the younger population increased between the period of 1966-1970 and the period of 1976-1980, but decreased between 1981 and 1985. In the elderly population, these increased almost linearly between 1966 and 1985.
The major causes of death, listed in order of numbers, were suicide, pneumonia and bronchitis, malignant neoplasm, heart disease, cerebro-vascular disease and psychosis. The younger patients had a extremely higher suicide mortality risk, but in the elderly patients, the major causes of death were pneumonia and bronchitis, cerebro-vascular disease and psychosis.
Mean death rates per year by psychiatric diagnosis were revealed as follows; symptomatic psychosis 263.2, senile psychosis 96.4, toxic psychosis 67.8, organic psychosis 61.2, manic-depressive disorder 28.6, schizophrenia 11.6, neurosis 6.6, and so on. The major causes of death of functional psychosis (schizophrenia and MDI) were suicide, malignant neoplasm and cerebro-vascular disease. The major causes of death of psychosis caused by organic factor (organic psychosis, senile psychosis and neurosyphilis) were pneumonia and bronchitis, heart disease and psychosis.
