With the increasing ratio of advanced-age population in our country, the number of patients with dysuria have increased. In many of these cases urological surgery and procedures cannot be performed because of various comlications. In these cases, a conventional method of indwelling catheters are easily performed, but intermittent catheterization has been recently applied in many urological fields.
In this paper, we report results of instruction of the intermittent catheterization in inoperable patients with prostatic hyperplasia, prostatic cancer and neurogenic bladder as follows.
The patients themselves or their family members could learn the technique of catheterization in 63 out of 65 cases. Subsequently, many cases remained catheterized.
The incidence of urinary tract infections by intermittent catheterization became less, the bladder function recovered and the residual urine volume decreased in most cases.
From the above-mentioned results, we emphasize that the intermittent catheterization without a use of indwelling catheters should be continued in patients with dysuria and urinary retention.
