Description
The effects of both the highly purified porcine FSH preparation with reduced LH activity (FSH-R, Denka Pharm.) and the commercialy available crude porcine FSH preparation (FSH-P, Denka Pharm.) for induction of twin pregnancy in cattle were compared. A total of 194 first lactating Holstein cows were treated with FSH-R (6-10 or 12 AU) or FSH-P (6-10 AU) and PGF2α analogue at mid-functional luteal stage. All of pregnant cows excluding one aboreted were slaughtered 52 to 109 days after insemination. The percentages of animals with more than 3 cyclic corpora lutea were 1.1% (1/91) for 6-10 AU FSH-R treatment and 26.3% (5/19) for 12 AU FSH-R treatment. Thus, it was suggested that an amount of 12 AU was overdosed. Estrus and conception rates in cows treated with FSH-R (6-10 AU) were significantly higher than those treated with FSH-P (91/98=92.9% vs. 62/76=81.6%, 62/91=68.1% vs. 32/62=51.6%, respectively), and the percentages of twin pregnancy with 2 pregnant corpora lutea were 70.6% (12/17) in FSH-R group and 50.0% (6/12) in FSH-P group. The difference was not found in the number of fetuses between two groups, and the percentages of pregnancies with single, twin or triplet or more fetuses were 78.7% (48), 19.7% (12), or 1.6% (1) in FSH-R group, and 75.0% (24), 18.8%(6), or 6.3%(2) in FSH-P group.
