Abstract

Ovarian follicular development was examined histologically in 420 adult rats following the treatment of 10, 20, or 40 IU of PMSG 54, 66, or 78 hours before the estimated time of ovulation (-54, -66, or -78h for short). The animals were sacrificed at various times from -78 to 0h (or 0 to 78 h after PMSG). Follicles over 250μm in diameter were classified into 7 arbitrary groups at intervals of 50μm.
1) In untreated control rats the number of healthy follicles over 550μm in diameter began to increase at -36h and reached 13.9 (including 10 ovulated ova) at 0h.
2) In rats treated with various doses of PMSG, the number of healthy follicles over 550μm in diameter began to increase rapidly 30 to 42 hours after treatment (or at -36 h) and reached maximum about 54 to 66 hours after treatment.
3) The healthy follicles over 550μm in diameter after treatment with 10, 20, or 40 IU of PMSG may have developed from the healthy follicles over 450, 400, or 350μm in diameter at the time of PMSG injection, respectively.
4) The number of healthy follicles less than 549μm in diameter increased shortly after PMSG injection and then decreased until -36 or -12 h.
5) The number of atretic follicles was increased by the treatment of PMSG, but decreased with high dose of PMSG. This phenomenon may resulted from rapid follicular development and dif-ferent life span of follicles by the treatment of various doses of PMSG.
