説明

Two experiments were conducted to find out suitable conditions applying the oviduct insufflation test to cattle. A total of 198 uterine horns with oviduct from 112 heifers and cows obtained from an abattoir were immersed in the saline and examined with a kymographic insufflation apparatus. In experiment I, no manipulation was done to the uterus during carbon dioxide gas insufflation. The patent oviducts were 93.3% in heifers and 43.6% in cows. The tests in remaining oviducts were discontinued because the insufflated gas penetrated into the endometrium or leaked from the cervical canal. The average initial pressure at the passage in heifers and cows were 80.5 mmHg and 74.3 mmHg, and those at the penetration 150.5 mmHg and 88.0 mmHg, respectively. In experiment II, the uterine horns were extended and massaged with the fingers during the first three minutes of the insufflation. The patent oviducts were 92.2% in heifers and 81.6% in cows. The latter was significantly higher than that in experiment I (P<0.01). The initial pressures at the passage were less than those in experiment I, especially in the cows (P<0.01). Kymographic tracings were classified as five types in the patent group, i.e., type I (descending), type II (crawling), type III (ascending), type IV (dropping) and mixed type; and as four types in the penetrated group, i.e., type V (dropping), type VI (descending), type VII (crawling) and mixed type. The results indicate that the procedure used in experiment II is safely applicable to living heifers and cows.
